hello...

"I am still in pursuit of whom I have not yet become"
Picture
My name is Lavina, and according to my business card, I shoot people for a living!

I want to thank you for stopping by to check things out, and thought I would get right to the heart of things:
If I wasn't a photographer, I would be sitting behind a desk moving paper from one end of an office to the other. Being in Office Admin once held the same passion and excitement for me that most of my photography does, and I enjoyed it while I was in it.  But I have always loved photos. Taking them, admiring them, and even being in them. When I became a mum, two things were evident: 1. I couldn't spend the time with our kids that I wanted to if I had to be in someone else's office 40 hours a week. I couldn't share their big firsts - the baby sitter would. and 2. That I had to put my hands to work in something I could schedule around my life, and that I would be passionate about.
(You can read more about the details of how I got started on the Blog )
I've spent the last 6 years primarily as a lifestyle photographer, and I treasure the families that I have watched grow from an engagement, to wedding, to baby bump, to newborn and first birthdays. But I have to admit its the weddings that get me! People have told me I am a little more than crazy about them - they all see the "same old" routine - but I don't. And I'll tell you why.

My husband and I got married young - we were college sweethearts and literally believed we could Live on Love
With little budget to speak of, a lot of the details were skimped on - flowers, decor, location and eventually photographer. I had scheduled someone who told me she had "double booked" herself when I called to confirm (3 weeks before the wedding) and she was going with the other client. In a panic, we asked a couple of friends to take some photos, bought 8 rolls of film (yes 2004 was before the DSLR age!) and hoped for the best. We have some really precious shots, but a lot of them are no where near a reflection of the details of our day. They don't tell all of our story, and all of them are in two small inconspicuous photo albums. No giant canvas prints, no leather-bound album on a coffee table, and only a handful of images that we showcase in our home.

Our love story has stood the test of time, but our photos are definately dated. So for me, your Wedding Photos are about more than the highlight moments (putting on the dress, arriving at the altar, ring exchange, etc). It's about the details that tell a story - your story - as a couple, and as a new family. It's about giving you images that will last your lifetime and beyond...the legacy of love your children and grandchildren can be inspired by.

My mentor pointed out that I always manage to find a piano for a detail shot...and he seems to have been right! I think a lot of my own personality comes out in the details I shoot - for example, flowers are incredibly beautiful to me - because my uncle is a talented florist and my mother grew the most darling garden. The piano is an instrument I play, and I love the symmetry in it's design. And the moment a father see's his daughter in her dress for the first time is a precious one as is the one where he walks her down the aisle - because my own father was unable to be at our wedding. And I know he would have looked at me in the dress my aunt and mom designed the same way yours will in yours if he is able to.

So there you have it - I'm a giant softy, more than likely to need a kleenex at some point in  your day (I carry mascara in my gear bag too!). I like to laugh, and enjoy good wine, summer road trips and spending time with the important people in my life.
I believe I can be the photographer you need because I am concerned about the details you spent months preparing over. I know that you didn't pick those colours randomly or the flowers and bouquet designs on a whim. I know that gorgeous seating chart and those favours took hours of your time. But MOST of all, I know that yours is a Love Story worth telling right. You have walked a unique journey together as a couple to get to this point, and I count it an honour to be the person to capture this moment for you to look back on as you continue your path together.
I am grateful that you took some time to get to know me, and I am excited to meet you, answer any questions, and be entrusted with capturing your special day for you.
